How I Use Roam, Notion And RemNote (2020)
I’ve been a strong advocate for using Notion for everything. However, as of late, I ventured into Roam and RemNote to see how I can fill in the gaps that I can’t find a place for in the all-in-one-app. For instance, flashcard creation, and backlink tagging to organize non-linear writing.
I use Notion primarily for task management, a life wiki (ie. budget, dog care, mood tracking), and a knowledge library. These three elements are connected to a concept cloud.
I’ve been exploring narrative writing and trying to improve my storytelling with Roam. I don’t find a lot of Roam use-cases for creative writing. For someone who writes in non-linear fashion—in bits-and-pieces, backlinking and deliberate tagging can organize characters, motivations, scenes, and a timeline pretty intuitively.
For RemNote, I use it primarily for language learning. This a space to retain knowledge that requires repetition and memorization. My French flashcards are in here.
As well, I have a folder for “questions and curiosities.” Any curiosities I have that are usually in the realm of politics or history, I try to jot down here. These are questions that I have very little knowledge of. Upon finding those answers, I have a flashcard generated to help move the new information into long-term memory. More about this here.
Instead of providing dozens of screenshots and explanations, I built the diagram below to give a birds-eye-view of what I use the three programs for, and how I relate and reference different elements.
